Move a Certificate

You may need to move an SSL certificate from one server to another if you upgrade your hardware or move to a new hosting company.

An SSL certificate is bound to both the server software (i.e., Microsoft to Microsoft) and the certificate common name (i.e., “www.company.co.uk” or “acme.co.uk”). If these remain identical, you can export the certificate and its private key from the original server and import it into the target server.

If multiple servers are being used, you will need to purchase 1 licence for every server being secured. You are required to license the TOTAL number of servers that will be secured."

Backup a Certificate >>

To move a certificate, you need to export the existing certificate or use the backup.

Import a Certificate >>

To import a certificate, select from the correct instructions for your software vendor and version.

Move to a New Host

If you do not manage your own servers, you will need to work with your hosting companies to move the certificates.

  1. Determine if the new hosting company uses the same server software vendor.
  2. Ask your current hosting company to export a copy of the certificate and send it to you.
  3. Provide the encrypted file to your new hosting company.

Replace a Certificate >>

If it is not possible to export the existing certificate, VeriSign can replace it for a small fee. You will need the common name, order number or serial number of the certificate to replace; the challenge phrase; and a new CSR for the new server.
