Charles Meyers appointed to the Board of Directors for MMA and CTIA
Appointment of Charles Meyers by key industry groups underscores VeriSign
Messaging and Mobile Media Division’s industry leadership
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., 29 April 2008 – VeriSign, Inc., the
trusted provider of Internet infrastructure services for the networked
world, today announced that Charles Meyers, president, VeriSign® Messaging
and Mobile Media, will assume VeriSign’s board seats for both the Mobile
Marketing Association (MMA) (www.mmaglobal.com)
and CTIA – The Wireless Association.
As a member of CTIA’s board, Meyers will participate
in various industry discussions and initiatives, including areas such
as convergence, mobile content and mobile messaging. With the MMA board,
Meyers will help lead the association in its charter to grow a sustainable
industry for mobile marketing globally with a focus on mobile advertising
and content.
Meyers’ appointments to both industry groups underscore
the breadth of expertise and leadership that the VeriSign Messaging
and Mobile Media division brings to the wireless and mobile media industry.
Joining Meyers as an advisor to CTIA is René Link,
vice president of corporate strategy, development and product marketing
for the VeriSign Messaging and Mobile Media division. Link will serve
on CTIA’s Wireless Internet Caucus (WIC) Leadership Council, a core
community of CTIA member companies dedicated to growing a large and
robust market at the convergence of wireless and Internet technologies,
products and services.
“VeriSign’s Messaging and Mobile Media division is
at the centre of the wireless and Internet industries,” said CTIA President
and CEO Steve Largent. “Charles and René have unique perspectives as
VeriSign executives that will be great assets to our board as we look
to optimise the opportunities that mobile will provide CTIA members
and the customers that depend on them.”
The VeriSign Messaging and Mobile Media division powers
inter-carrier mobile messaging for seven of the top 10 wireless carriers
in North America. The company’s global infrastructure currently enables
more than 400 million messages on a typical day. In 2007, VeriSign enabled
96 billion mobile messages across its network globally, up from 43 billion
in 2006. Similarly, the division’s combined mobile messaging networks
reach more than 2 billion global wireless customers through its network
of more than 500 of the world’s leading wireless service providers.
“Charles brings critical knowledge of the mobile value
chain to our board,” said Laura Marriott, president of the MMA.
“VeriSign’s Messaging and Mobile Media division plays a key role in
directing and delivering mobile messages and content securely and properly
which is critical to our association’s mission.”
Meyers said: “The world of messaging and mobile media
is changing rapidly. From the use of text messaging in primetime television
shows and concerts, to the growing ability of handsets to handle increasingly
robust content, billions of people now spend a significant part of their
day connected via the mobile world. CTIA and the MMA are committed to
making that world more exciting – and more secure – for every consumer.”
Meyers has been with VeriSign since 2006. He previously
held executive positions with Level 3 Communications, Kinetic Ventures,
Internet Security Systems and BellSouth.
